Sawdust on Deck

Homeowners from Basking Ridge called with the complaint ‘there is sawdust on my deck’. Immediately the two possible culprits come to mind, Carpenter ants or carpenter bees! There were not any ants being reported on or near the deck nor did we see any, so it may be carpenter bees. The search begins for one half inch diameter holes and it does turn up a number. These are from carpenter bees. At the time, midday, we were at the premise we did not see a carpenter bee, but the holes were there! A thorough treatment, required to eliminate these destructive bees, was performed to protect the family’s deck. Fresh falling sawdust is always a warning and should be investigated asap so the proper solution can be applied. Decks and homes are too valuable and expensive to repair to allow insects any time to damage.
