Big Black Ants in the Ground

Mount Olive callers along with some from Somerville has asked ‘what are these big black ants nesting in the ground?’ Well, believe it or not, they are Carpenter ants. And these particular Carpenter ants have for some reason not fully understood decided to nest in the ground rather than in wood. This ‘out of the box’ thinking by carpenter ants is not entirely new but seems more common this year than any of the previous 40 I have worked. Carpenter ants create  a series of inter connected colonies and this hold true for in ground as well. The treatment of which requires a somewhat different approach. Simply soaking the ground nest with a pesticide will not solve the problem, the ants have planned for excessive liquids (rain) as they constructed their nest. Biology and chemistry always have to come together for a successful treatment.
